If I die, leave the balcony open.
The child eats oranges.
(From my balcony I see him).
The reaper harvests the wheat.
(From my balcony I feel it).
If I die, leave the balcony open!
Federico García Lorca
A horse in the stable, a woman with a dead child in her arms. A bull in the room. The blind grope for the veil of time. Little by little, the details form an image.
The living legend of flamenco, Carmen Linares; the recent winner of the National Dance Award, Rafaela Carrasco; the master of flamenco piano, Pablo Suárez; and the Kaari & Roni Martin Company gather in the room of Spain’s national poet, Federico García Lorca, outside whose walls the world goes mad.
¡LORCA! presents Linares’ interpretation and Roni Martin’s new arrangements of Lorca’s flamenco lyrics (1931), deeply rooted in Roma, Sephardic Jewish, and Arab culture of Andalusia. From the recording of these poems to Lorca’s murder and the creation of Picasso’s Guernica, only five years passed.
