Synopsis

In the press of May 1947, we can find that the dancer and canzonetista Encarnita Luque performs the dance “Estampío” in Guadalajara during the festivities in honor of San Fernando. This and other findings in the press of the time, such as the legacy that was left to us and that has been transmitted by his disciples, come to confirm the importance that the role of Juan Sánchez Valencia “Estampío” (1879-1957) played in the configuration of 20th-century flamenco dance. For us as a creative tandem, dancers/bailaores, and teachers, this important legacy almost in the process of disappearing, these contributions that the master from Jerez offered to the history of flamenco from the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés and that he walked through national and international stages, represents an open window to the past through which we must look and that we must show to new generations as a base and source of inspiration for the current choreographic creation of flamenco dance. Flamenco dance feeding on its roots and its past from the perspective of the time we are living.

We will start from the ZAPATEADO, which the master from Jerez configured from the teachings he received in Madrid from the Sevillian Salud Rodríguez and the Madrid-born Patricio López Alonso “el Feo” and from the heritage they received from their teachers, “el Raspador” and the “Jorobado de Linares” to create a current musical and physical score that already served us as inspiration and basis for scenes of shows such as “…aquel Silverio,” “La confluencia,” or “Meter los pies.”
