Cuarteta travels through dance and singing in a rehearsal of a “carnival quartet,” a genuine carnival group from Cádiz, where its components are never four but three or five.
In this context of role inversion, Rosario Toledo, Inma “La Carbonera,” and Eva Ruiz “La Lebri” insist on dancing backwards, singing backwards, laughing backwards. And they do it with ovaries in the cheeks, lungs in the nose, head in the butt, and back on the forehead. With a traditional repertoire turned over, reversed, altered, disrupted, contrary, antagonistic.
“In the process of investigating what it means to dance flamenco backwards, we are realizing how much flamenco already has of inverted. We understand, then, carnival humor as that making the established structure wobble, as a place and time of inversion, where everything fits both forwards and backwards“, explains the artist.
Rosario Toledo is joined on stage by Inma “La Carbonera” and Eva Ruíz “La Lebri,” two female singers of flamenco tradition who accompany her with curiosity and a willingness to share what they know in service of this project in which they have investigated through Cádiz-carnival humor from the feminine perspective, with the assistance of Idoia Zabaleta and the accompaniment of Pedro G. Romero.
